Abstract:

Background: Tibial plateau fractures are complex injuries that require meticulous surgical management to optimize functional recovery. Dual plating has gained recognition for enhancing stability and reducing complications compared to traditional single plating techniques.
Objective: This prospective study aims to assess the clinical and radiological outcomes of dual plating in patients with tibial plateau fracture assessment (Schatzker type V and VI).
Materials and Methods: This study involved 30 patients who met specific inclusion and exclusion criteria and had adequate soft tissue healing prior to undergoing dual plating for tibial plateau fractures. Follow-up assessments were conducted at 6 weeks, 3 and 6 months post-surgery. Clinical outcomes were evaluated using the Oxford Knee Score (OKS), while radiological assessments utilized standard imaging techniques to monitor fracture healing.
Results: At the 6-month mark, 12 patients (40%) achieved excellent OKS scores, 10 patients (33.3%) had good scores, 6 patients (20%) exhibited moderate scores, and 1 patient (3.3%) reported poor scores. Radiological evaluations confirmed satisfactory fracture union in 24 cases (80%), indicating favourable recovery. Complications that arose were managed appropriately.
Conclusion: Dual plating is an effective surgical option for tibial plateau fractures, resulting in positive clinical and radiological outcomes within 6 months of surgery. These findings support the literature advocating for dual plating to achieve improved stability and functional recovery. Future studies with larger cohorts and extended follow-up are essential to validate these results and establish long-term efficacy.
